Lyon

France’s second city at the meeting of the Rhône and the Saône: a university-hospital city, a finance and biotech employer base, and the gastronomic capital — at a fraction of Paris prices on this edition’s (admittedly older) dated sample.

Lyon from Fourvière: the Saône, the Presqu’île rooftops and the Part-Dieu towers

Who picks Lyon

Employees in finance, biotech and international organisations; Talent and Blue Card holders whose employers sit outside Paris; families who want a CHU city with a deep school bench; students around its large universities; and long-stayers who want a real working city with two rivers, not a resort. The CHU depth (Hospices Civils de Lyon) makes it the healthcare heavyweight of the mid-price set.

Who should skip it

Anyone who needs this edition to prove Lyon’s current rent level — our one captured sample is months old and prints with its date showing (below). Beach-first movers should also look south: Lyon is a river city, two hours from the sea.

How you live in France comes first: employees, Talent and Blue Card holders, founders, independent professionals, students, families and non-working long-stayers each use a different route. France has no retirement visa and no nomad visa; the visitor route is residence-without-work, and retirement is one stop among several. The full routes section sits on the France page. See the routes section on the France page.

Healthcare in Lyon

The Hospices Civils de Lyon run one of the country’s great university-hospital systems — Édouard-Herriot and Croix-Rousse are the named anchors — so specialty depth is not the reason to leave this city. Your public route runs through PUMA affiliation at the Lyon CPAM after three months’ stable residence if you are not working (immediately if employed), with the visa-stage private policy bridging the wait and a mutuelle priced after affiliation; U.S. Medicare pays nothing here. Official bed and specialty metrics beyond the named anchors were not captured for this edition and print as a GAP.

Climate & ground feel

Continental river-city weather: cold winters, hot summers in the Rhône corridor, and real wind off the rivers. Verify current conditions on an official weather source before you plan a move date; no seasonal averages were captured to this standard.

Getting around

Lyon-Saint Exupéry airport and the Saint-Exupéry TGV station put Paris about two hours away by rail; inside the city, métro, tram and bus cover the Presqu’île and the hills, and most central residents live car-light. No timetable or fare figures are printed because none were verified to this standard.

The people side

A working city with a large student population, a serious food culture, and a smaller anglophone scene than Paris — French carries daily life here, which is either the point or the problem. The administration (prefecture du Rhône, CPAM) runs in French in practice. Specific club, faith and volunteer listings are gathered from your profile inside the dossier rather than invented here.

Watch-outs

A short story of Lyon

Lyon began as Roman Lugdunum at the confluence of the Rhône and the Saône, became a silk-weaving power (the canuts’ traboules still thread the Croix-Rousse hill), and rebuilt itself as a banking, biotech and gastronomy city. From Fourvière — our photograph — the two rivers divide the old town, the Presqu’île and the modern Part-Dieu towers.
